The Lord Giveth and The Lord Taketh Away

Not necessarily in that order:

BANDA ACEH, Indonesia - Darmi Ali lost his three daughters and wife to the
2004 tsunami. The 44-year-old remarried, and last week became a father again—
of triplets, all of them female.

“I am overjoyed,” said Ali, a police officer who was back at work Wednesday at
regional headquarters in Aceh, the Indonesian province worst hit by the giant
waves. “I lost my three daughters, and now they have been replaced by three
other girls.”

The Cologne Monster, a Nasty Bug, and a Fridge

During high school, we would often visit family friends of ours during our trips to West Virginia. My friend, Susan, had a friend named Cameron who would occasionally visit while we were there. Cameron, I believe, must have been hard of smelling, for he wore WAY too much “Preferred Stock” cologne. (If you’re not familiar with this particular cologne, visit your local Meijer or Kmart and check out their fragrance section- you should be able to find it there.) Now, this particular scenario has been locked away in the far reaches of my memory for well over 10 years. “So why dust it off now?” you ask. Well, there’s a new / temp guy who bathed in the exact same cologne this morning, who is sitting in the cube next to me. The pungent odor is almost overwhelming, and giving me a serious headache.

Add to that the fact that I am recovering from a nasty little bug that showed up late Friday, and has kept me out of commission until late yesterday afternoon. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a fever over 101ยบ… I’m hoping that I’ll be able to eat something today.

On a happy note, I am now the proud owner of my very own new-to-me fridge! Yeah, big whoop, but just about everything I own is a hand-me-down, so I’m excited!

Snow Day!

Ok, two snow days.

Since early Monday, the media was forecasting the "Blizzard of 2007." I'm trying to find out just how much snow we actually got, as there were very high winds all day yesterday. All I can seem to find right now is a blanket total of "6-16 inches in Northwest Ohio." I'd say here on the Mighty Maumee, just outside of Downtown Toledo, we got about 8 inches... but who really knows? All I know is that most of the day yesterday, we couldn't see anything across the river!

Anyway. None too comfortable with the idea that I may need to pilot a rear-wheel drive boat of a car through this reputed blizzard (as I am used to front-wheel drive, and a chicken,) I planned ahead. (I'm a good Boy Scout) I got to stay home, warm and dry yesterday, while all the other poor saps went in to work.

Dad would be proud: two computers, side-by-side, cranking away. I brought a laptop home from work, originally so that I could get a lot of work done after work, and this weekend. Lucky for me, I brought it home in time to work out of my "Executive Office." You should see my secretary: he's pretty cute :)

Simple Pleasures

Funny, the little things that we can get so excited about. Here are a few I've noticed myself appreciating in the last few weeks:

1. new socks
2. splurging on a good Cafe Mocha
3. a piece of dove dark chocolate
4. discovering Opera as good "listening at work" music
5. the smile on my god-daughter's face when she realizes who I am

That's what it is here in old T-town. They're forecasting frigid, arctic temps all weekend. Sounds like a good weekend to practice one's agorophobia (fear of leaving one's home.)

Small update: I have until noon-ish on Monday to have our package of about 200 drawings ready for "60% review." Good news is that I will be getting some serious overtime on my next paycheck(I'm at 10 now, and have a lot to do beofre Monday). The bad news: I have to actually work those hours. Good thing it's going to be miserable outside this weekend :)
